🫒 Sage
Salvia officinalis · Year-round
📖 About Sage
The wise one. Its very name means "to save" — and sage has been revered across cultures as a purifier of both body and spirit. A foundational herb for every homestead.
⚕️ Uses & Remedies
Sore throat remedy, digestive aid, memory support, antimicrobial. Use as gargle, tea, culinary herb, or dried bundles. Sage honey is extraordinary.
🌱 Growing Tips
Full sun, well-drained soil, not too much water. Sage is Mediterranean at heart and prefers lean conditions. Woody perennial in zones 5–8. Replace plants every 3–4 years as they become leggy. Start new plants from cuttings of non-flowering stems.
🔬 Preparation Notes
Harvest leaves before the plant flowers for culinary use. For medicinal use, leaves can be harvested anytime. Sage tea should be steeped no more than 10 minutes — longer and it becomes overly astringent. Dry leaves whole and crumble when ready to use.
🕯️ Spiritual Reflection
The name says it all: Salvia, from the Latin "salvare" — to save, to heal. In every ancient tradition, sage was the herb of wisdom, the herb of elders, the herb you burned to cleanse a space before prayer. Wisdom is not knowledge. Wisdom is knowing what matters and having the courage to live accordingly. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." — Proverbs 9:10
